Our Ad Oct 22 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is the dawn of the sixth millennium and the skies are darkening, for the suns themselves are fading. Humans reached the stars long ago, building a Republic of high technology and universal emancipation - and then squandered it, fought over it, and finally lost it. A new Dark Age has descended on humanity, for the greatest of civilizations has fallen and even the stars die. Now, feudal lords rule the Known Worlds, vying for power with fanatic priests and scheming guilds.

Star Crusade is a new MUX from the creators of Dark Between the Stars and Battlestar Odysseys, set on the desert planet where the Prophet received his revelation of humanity's promise and peril. Yathrib is a world divided, where religious and political conflict hides deeper mysteries beneath the sands.

Politics, war, adventure - faith and hope, passion and sorrow - make Star Crusade a new saga of humanity's fate among the stars.

Skill Split: Warfare & Command Oct 24 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After some discussion, we have decided to split the Warfare skill in two, with the new skills called Command and Warfare.

The Command skill is the professional skill of NCOs and company commanders; it covers tactics and leadership and is used to command anywhere from a small unit to a whole starship, with the break in ground forces usually coming around the company or battalion scale, depending on the level of independence given to individual soldiers.

Warfare, by contrast, is the professional skill of field and general officers. It includes fleet tactics involving multiple ships, the strategy and logistics of a campaign, and the command of an army-sized force in the field.

There is some overlap between these two skills at the upper end of command and the lower end of warfare; a battle between 500 soldiers on a side might be a contest of Warfare rolls, while the commander of a battalion of 500 soldiers in a clash of 5000-man armies might be rolling Command. When a conflict is more than a skirmish between a couple hundred people, the commander of each force tends to roll Warfare while her subcommanders roll Command.

In light of this, we have transferred everyone's existing Warfare trait to the Command trait, as most of our characters do not have experience as generals. If you think you deserve some Warfare, though, send a +request!

Akko Grid Map Oct 25 2012 Emanuel

There is now a graphical map for the in game grid of Akko, if you spot any missing rooms then please do log a +request or mail me (though I did deliberately not map the interior of the Auberge). Hopefully this will make it easier for people to find their way around the city and figure out how it is set up.

Special thanks to Idonea for spotting the whole section I had missed.

Channel Logging Oct 28 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the request of Logan, we have implemented channel logging on the Public and Guests channels -- they now keep a record of the last 25 things that were said in case someone gets disconnected or logs into the middle of a conversation. The command is '+p last 25' (or last 10, or 5, or however many messages you want to recall.

We had not originally implemented this feature because of privacy concerns, but if y'all want it, we're happy to have it. Remember that someone can log in and look at what you said, now, though. If there's some problem that this ultimately creates, we can go back to not logging, but we are a full-service establishment here!

IC Periods and Advancement Nov 01 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folks,

We now have a system for character advancement, which I know many of you have been wanting to see. It is here:

http://starcrusade.fadingsuns.org/index.php?title=IC_Periods_and_Advancement

In short, everyone advances at the same rate, and people's advancement is based off what they have been ICly up to lately. Each IC Period - roughly 2-3 RL weeks - characters submit a list of the three most important Major Efforts they have been engaged in, and they can advance two traits related to each Major Effort. Absent unusual circumstances, no trait can be advanced more than once per IC Period, and the chart for advancement is on the wiki.

Meeting with NPCs Nov 02 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Staff is happy to run scenes with NPCs, particularly the major setting NPCs like Geoffrey, Walker, Theo, or Clovis. In general, though, we want people to primarily be RPing with other PCs, so we prefer to resolve questions from setting NPCs via +request. If it's a complicated issue or it's going to be a meeting with several PCs, however, we are happy to run the scene.

Shifting Alliances Nov 04 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a very rough sense of what transpired over the course of court, but alliances shifted a lot. Can all the peers and captains @mail me answers to the following questions so I can make sure we're clear?

1.) What was your public vote/statement about Sir William as Constable? Did you later make a public change about your position towards him?

2.) What was your public vote/statement about Count Galen as a Captain-General?

3.) What was your public statement about what should happen in Issen?

4.) What was your public vote/statement about who should be Chancellor?

5.) What your public attitude towards the various counts, broadly - Count Walker, Count Galen, and the PC counts Antonio, Lyov, Renaud and Amber?

It will help me keep things straight. I have a log, so ultimately the scene will rule, but I'd like to know what you think went on as well.

Help We Need Nov 05 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, there's some stuff we need help with. Please send in a +request if you can help out.

1.) Wiki management.

We need a wiki-god, someone who knows how to format and manage Mediawiki. If you have any Mediawiki skills and are willing to volunteer, holler at us.

2.) +gear updating.

One of the big reasons you don't have +gear is because we changed a bunch of item stats but have not yet updated the IC lists. There's some final tweaking and writing I need to do, but we need to do the data entry and get them in the system. Let me know if you can help with that.

Reactive and Proactive NPCs Nov 06 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We discussed a little bit our attitude towards setting NPCs in 5/11, and we want to talk a little bit more about our sense of NPCs in this post, particularly as we work out how we're going to handle parts of the game.

Staff's position is that NPCs of all stripes exist to make better play for players. They support, inspire, and encourage PC goals, provide vehicles to tell stories, and give depth and character to the setting. Secondarily, playing NPCs is also one source of enjoyment for staff; we have fun playing NPCs, and being able to get into their characters is one way we enjoy the game.

Most of our NPCs - particularly the big setting NPCs like Geoffrey, Theo, Clovis and Walker - are reactive NPCs. Every once in a while we will use them to instigate plots, but mostly they react to player ideas, either by supporting or opposing them, and we generally don't trot them out on the grid unless we need to for a big scene. Particularly among the big political NPCs, we do this for a reason: we want PCs to be stars of the political drama, even if for continuity, plot, and information-management reasons we have a framework of NPCs around them. Ultimately, for instance, we expect the government of the Crusader State to be run by a PC Constable and PC Chancellor - PCs who are not staff alts - even if we also have an NPC Guardian to temper the vicissitudes of characters coming and going and to keep plots fresh.

Other NPCs need to be more proactive, instigating plots and RP on the grid and being played regularly by staff in a similar fashion as a PC. There are a couple places that scream for proactive NPCs; one of these is certain kinds of 'plot-creating' NPCs, where some character becomes friends with other PCs organically and then gets deliberately into trouble to generate RP. Overly ambitious vassal NPCs can fall into this class, pulling their liege lords into sticky situations, and so can 'false friend' NPCs - on a prior game, for instance, we had a few antinomist NPCs who slowly seduced players into their dark rites. Another sort of proactive NPC is a certain kind of spymaster NPC, which was the genesis of this taxonomy. While most of the intelligence agencies in the Known Worlds are easy enough to have on-world leadership by a PC, two agencies have such a broader scope and access that it is almost impossible to give a character the perspective a senior spymaster would have. These are the Imperial Eye and the Jakovian Agency, by far the biggest spy networks - they hear little bits about everything, and staff really has to make moment-to-moment judgments about what they know and similar 'good of the game' judgments about what they let leak out and what they are interested in supporting. The deep internal complexity of these agencies also makes it difficult for a player to manage them. We do, however, want a spy story, and so we intend to have proactive NPC chiefs for these agencies who are more or less publicly known; Anton will be the Jakovian chief, while Vandelay will be the Imperial Eye head. Expect to see them out and about on the grid, supporting and encouraging agents, members of their faction, and others who seem like they support their agendas.

As always, if you have any questions, page, @mail, or +request.

As afraid as I am of how this is going to fill up Malcolm's beautiful +request queue, if you want a residence on grid please submit a +request.

I would prefer to build barons and other nobles a suite in the palace of your count, though if forced to it I will build you a small palace.

Priests, I can hook you up with a cell somewhere.

Knights and guilders, I can hook you up with a flat either inside the city (if you are wealthy) or in the Foregate.

Please mention the sort of place you'd like to live in your +request. I can't promise I'll finish it quickly, but at least I can keep track of who wants what.

IC Period 0 Nov 12 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, we have not been able to complete the code we'd like for Major Efforts and IC Periods. so for this first IC Period - "IC Period 0" - we are going to use the +request system instead.

By Friday, please send in one +request with all three of your Major Efforts for the IC Period that began when the game opened. Please include the two Advances you'd like for each of your Major Efforts, and note the IC acts you've done as part of your Major Effort.

The +request should look like this:

+request Major Efforts=1.) Exploring Ancient Ruins%r%rI explored an antique starship buried in the desert, and then did some research into the origins of the strange designs I saw there. P ran the TP.(Advances: Occult Lore, Survival)%r%r2.) Making friends at Lyov's court%r%rI have been hanging out in Auberry and the Palais Maleband, getting in good with the courtiers there. Please see my rumor at 1/4 as well as many scenes I had had. (Advances: Smooth blessing, Courtier)%r%r3.) Making defensive plans for my manor house.%r%rI have been working with several Muster NPCs to draw up defensive plans for my manor house and then drill my household troops in the plans. I've scened with Solomon and put up a rumor (1/7) about my troops drilling. (Advances: Command, Wits)

We should have better code for Major Efforts by the time we wrap up IC Period 1.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, we forgot Knavery on the skills list, and that means none of you have it.

Knavery is the skill of lying and deceiving others; it can be used to disguise one's self as something one is not, for fast-talking, impersonation, and con artistry, and for convincingly appearing as someone one is not. (The Perform skill can also be used in some acting situations, though it is more focused on the theatrical.)

If your character should have Knavery, put in a +request and we'll add it at the appropriate level. Thieves, con artists, spies, lawyers - you're the folks who are most likely to have the skill.

Notes: Major Efforts Nov 15 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tomorrow is the deadline for IC Period 0. Get your requests in, since we'll be processing on Saturday.

A couple notes as people's Major Efforts have been rolling in.

1.) New Off-Camera Stuff

Several people have wanted to start some project as part of their Major Effort. That's absolutely cool and we encourage it - if you want to be raiding the Kurgans off-camera, or training your troops, or whatever, cool. If you want us to adjudicate something about that, submit a separate +request, but if it is just noting that you are doing it it's fine to just be part of your Major Effort.

2.) Major Efforts and IC Reality

All Major Efforts do need to have some reflection in IC reality though, so include what you are up to in scenes or - particularly - post up rumors about what you have been doing off-camera. Been aggressively raiding the Kurgans? Post up a rumor that says 'Lord Johnson has been sending out more and more raids in force against nearby Kurgan lands as the summer campaign season approaches.' Mostly, folks have done an excellent job of mentioning what the IC reflection of their major efforts has been - I have had scenes with people planning this action, I have been in a TP doing this, etc - but make sure you include that info in your Major Effort, and if it is some action that others would know about there needs to be a rumor, a Public Notice, or something to tell folks what public stuff you have been up to.

3.) Command, Warfare

Basically everyone has had a Major Effort for which they want to raise both Command and Warfare. That is rarely appropriate - Command represents personal, in-the-field small unit tactics and leadership, while Warfare represents behind-the-desk grand strategy. Choose one and then use your other advance for that Major Effort on something else relevant - Command and Melee, for leading a charge, or Warfare and Yathrib, for planning a campaign. There are rare cases where both are appropriate for one Major Effort, like some grand on-screen battle where a general character plans the 10,000 man fight and then leads his personal bodyguard in the van, but we haven't really had any engagements on the army scale so far.

Hint: Goals & Maneuvers Nov 15 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, staff has noticed that someone with a goal of 11 and appropriate maneuvers routinely outperforms someone with a goal of 13 and no maneuvers. As you all think about how you are going to focus the advancement of your characters, this may be worth considering - those of you who want to excel in combat should be looking at maneuvers as much if not more than Dexterity and Melee.

The two career blessings General Staff and Army Command were causing no small degree of confusion thanks to their names implying they were something other than what they were supposed to be. As of now Army Command is Ground Command, it represents personally commanding a military unit not an entire army.

General Staff is now Marshal and represents high level command of entire theatres of war, being an admiral, directing a star armada or managing continent scale ground campaigns.

The Pace of Advances Nov 19 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We've had questions from several folks about the pace of advances in the advancement system. Several notes are worth being made.

First, people learn new things quite quickly - one character learned 4 new skills during IC Period 0, for instance. In general, advancement from rank amateur to professional is quite fast. Consider this:

In one IC period, a character will go from knowing nothing to being an amateur.

Two periods after that, the character is an apprentice - they are capable of providing meaningful assistance to a professional. In game terms, this means they can provide a synergy bonus when helping someone else with the appropriate task - a scout commander with Warfare 2 could relay back information to help a general, for instance, while a research assistance with Academia 2 could provide synergy to a more accomplished scholar by helping find books, summarize research, and formulate ideas. An apprentice blacksmith could help his master at the forge, providing synergy, while an apprentice spy could give a spymaster synergy on an Espionage roll by couriering messages, manning dead-drops, and the like.

Three IC Periods after that a character is an experienced apprentice, able to accomplish professional-level tasks with just a little help (in the form of a synergy bonus) from a character with more skill. At this point, a character with a 5 rating in a trait, a 3 skill, synergy from supervision and synergy from a related skill or career will be hitting goal 10, succeeding 50% of the time at hard tasks.

Four more IC periods and the character is a newly minted professional, able to hang their own shingle. With synergy bonuses, they are likely to be at goal 11, succeeding about 2/3rds of the time at demanding, combat-difficulty tasks.

In addition to the pace of people learning, we would like folks to spread out their advances, which is why we have the one-per-trait rule. That way, a character sees graduated progress; they are unlikely to be focusing in 6 different things, and so they will see some traits (those they are still learning) rise more quickly while they gain more slowly in their focus areas. Over time, people become more skilled in their focus, but they also become more broadly skilled, which we thinks helps parity with new folks coming into the game. Additionally, we think this removes the difficult quandary players often find themselves in; if they dedicate XP towards something other than their focus they won't be able to 'keep up with the joneses', even if they would like to also develop new talents. Now, there's no fear that a character who wants to learn something new is going to be penalized in a duel when fighting the character who has never raised Courtier but puts all their XP into Dex and Melee.

System Workshop - Sunday @ Noon! Nov 19 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lextius is going to be running a system workshop on Sunday at noon Pacific time. I think there are a lot of system questions, many of them because we really a pretty skeletal description of it on the wiki, and so hopefully this seminar will answer those questions and help people figure out what it all means.

Before then, though, we want to drop in a special preview reminder about synergy bonuses. A lot of folks appear to be rolling their naked skill in non-combat situations, but almost always characters will have 1 or 2 synergy bonuses if the skill is something they are good at. Careers are the chief source of this - a character with a Command of 4 and two careers in Ground Command will get a +2 bonus, but skills can be, too - especially People & Places skills. The character with a Doctrine of 3 and an Academia of 5 will get a +1 when researching Church lore using Academia. If he is researching about the theology of the Saint Jackson cult on Yathrib, his Yathrib People & Places skill of 4 might give him another synergy bonus. Make sure you are adding in your synergy bonuses when you roll - in general, moderately experienced characters are going to have a +2 from related skills and careers in the areas they focus on, a +1 in areas of ancillary focus and no bonus when it is not something in their wheelhouse.

Some specific notes about synergy:

Occult careers grant synergy to related occult rolls. Visionary might grant a bonus to Ven Lohji Theurgy rites, while Healer might grant a bonus to Amalthea rites. Mystic probably grants a bonus to all Theurgy rites. Similarly, Dervish will give a bonus to Bedlam or Soma rolls, while Thought Police might give a bonus to Psyche and Sixth Sense rolls. Fayvana or Invisible Path will give a bonus to /any/ Psi rite!

Similar, with the military careers, Ground Command or Void Command tend to give synergy bonuses to Command and Warfare rolls made in their theater, while careers like Marshal or Staff Officer tend to give Warfare bonuses only, but in a broader range of circumstances - Staff Officer to logistics-like rolls (and also to bureaucracy rolls) while Marshal to grand strategy and even some political People & Places questions.

If you have more questions about Synergy - or any other system question! - come to the seminar or talk to staff.

New Policy/Command: +chrono Nov 20 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folks,

We have an information gap on the game - not only do players not have a great sense of what is going on, staff doesn't. We can't tell you what is happening if we don't know what is happening.

To help alleviate this we have coded the +chrono command. The syntax is:

        +chrono <title>=<description of RP>

This is a quick command that will post on a staff-only bboard and also send you a copy of the message, and it's intended to be used for quick and dirty summaries of your RP. Aliases include +chron, +chronicle, and for the digerati, +tweet. Try to include the who, what, where, when and how - for example:

+chrono Master Banana Plan=Captain Johnson and I met at the Muster Hiring Hall to discuss airdropping two hundred thousand banana peels on Malaga; we wanted to show the Kurgans how they had slipped up. Mid-way through the conversation, Private Sasha came in dressed only in a towel, and we talked to her about our banana plan. She didn't get the picture.

This is obviously not a substitute for rumors. Depending on the scene, one person can submit a +chrono for everyone or individual people can submit +chronos. Individual +chronos are particularly helpful if you think staff should know something about the scene that other people wouldn't - (IE, this scene really emotionally affected me, or I was secretly plotting all along to do X) or any other time separate perspectives would make things clearer.

Feel free to spam +chrono! Even if you want to leave us messages about how you had happy funtimes with your main squeeze, great (though no details, please). We want to know what people are up to on the grid, so mundane RP is as good a topic for a +chrono as weighty political or adventure RP, though we really do need you to submit +chronos for the latter RP.

To encourage people to submit +chronos, there is an incentive - bonus advances. If we feel like you have been documenting a good part of your RP on +chrono, will will give you one bonus advance per IC period to a trait chosen by staff that is represented by your +chronos. This may even double you up on one of your Major Effort advances! If you have been documenting an enormous amount of your RP, we may instead give you two (2!) bonus advances, though they won't be in the same thing. Don't expect to get two bonus advances every period, but we won't be stingy about it, either.

More than bribes, though, we really want to know what is going on so we can craft rumors, intelligence reports, and generally tell stories that react to what you all do. So please, use +chrono often.

I will be gone from tomorrow until Monday. It will be a difficult weekend for me - pray for me as I sit on my parents' deck, look at the ocean, and drink wine. It's going to be in the mid-60s, so I may have to wear a sweater and turn on the deck heaters.

Time Keeps Slipping... Nov 21 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have slowed down to time to .75:1, at least for Thanksgiving, though unless staff a lot of complaints I suspect we will keep it at this slower rate through the holiday season, based on the few responses we've gotten on +bboard 7.

Housing Requests Nov 22 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hombor and I are building three housing locations in the next few days. Please +request if you want a suite in one of them.

1.) The Old Terminal. As discussed before, this is a sort of headquarters for Crusader Captains.

2.) The Scarlet. This is a high-class inn that caters to wealthy young nobles and guilders (and priests!) with more money than sense; they get room service, full-time servants, and generally drink a lot and get into duels. It off the East Ramblas, a new street I added east of the Outer Ward, and if you are a hell-raising young noble it is a good place to take rooms.

3.) Caroline's -- Caroline's is another upper-class in, though it is for women only - noble ladies and priests, usually, though there are some guilders who take rooms there as well. Caroline herself is a retired member of the Courtesan's Guild, who (despite their sometimes salacious reputation) actually excel in providing guidance and advice to the nobility. Caroline acts as a sort of house mother to the young ladies in her charge, and indeed is often paid handsomely for this by their families. Of course, not all of Caroline's tenants are as excited about having a second mother once they have escaped the first, and successfully penetrating Caroline's walls to visit a paramour, claim a stolen prize or just boast about circumventing the house rules is a common effort by young noblemen, though the number of successful attempts are far fewer than the number of successful stories.

If you want suites in any of these three places, please +request.

Military Stuff Nov 22 2012 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You guys are moving a lot faster than we are on military stuff. We need a campaign system and a mass combat system, and we don't have those things.

It's worth noting that it takes time to raise troops. Your armsmen have to make arrangements for someone to care for their farms, get to a mustering point, decide who is going to be in charge among the various knights (and maybe fight some duels or joust to settle those questions) and then actually get to the front, which can take its own time. ICly, the start of people wanting to engage in hostilities occurs some time before the start of those hostilities.

Additionally, I think it's worth talking a little bit about scale. Counties are not in the offing, barring some exceptional circumstance. A very successful season of campaigning may see a barony or two change hands; a bad season may see you lose the same. Counts do not see any meaningful threat to their personal lands, not even Joyeaux, who is the farthest towards the front, though Johburg and Leon could see maritime raiding into their desmenses in a meaningful way. The only folks who should be feeling like the season could pose an existential threat are frontier barons, since they could in fact lose their lands if war goes poorly. Remember that during the Betrayal, the Mortimers handed the entire county of Auberry to the Kurgans, and it still took them the better part of a year to conquer it. It took the next three-plus years to conquer Leon and get to the gates of Akko, and the Kurgans outmatched the Known Worlders at that time -- and then after 4996, when Joscelin returned, it took another four years or so to get back to where we are today, including a huge influx from the Flavian Crusade. Manage your expectations accordingly.

One final note: PCs and NPCs exist on the same scale, militarily, so prepare for the possibility of loss. It's important to staff that war puts your lands at risk, and we don't really want to take PC's toys arbitrarily. That's one of the reasons why we have set the war bar where we're thinking of setting it - a few baronies a season - and also why we want to have a campaign season in place so you all know what the stakes are when you make decisions. Obviously, there are some arbitrary IC factors and events that will affect things (Sidon, for instance, is much more likely to fall than Helborg), but we'd like to have a system so you guys don't get blindsided or feel like we're just picking winners and losers.

P.S. This post represents our current state of mind. It could change by the time we all have a chance to sit down and hash out a system, but it is a 'best guess' snapshot of how we expect campaigns to work, scale and risk-wise.

Missing Careers Nov 23 2012 Lextius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of you are missing careers, usually your first career - half of staff was statting folks with 'first career at age 13, then second at 18, third at 23, fourth at 28, etc.' The other half was 'first at 18, second at 23, third at 28, etc.' If you are in the second category, please send in a +request for what your first career should be - almost always, it will be something like 'Squire', 'Equerry', 'Debutante', 'Novice', 'Apprentice' or the like.

We've added a new Curse, called Illiterate. If you think your character should have it, please send in a +request. It should be noted that the majority of the Known Worlds should have this Curse. Also, due to popular demand, we're going to start tracking Languages on +sheet2. If you think your character knows a language besides Urthish, please send in a +request, stating which languages and a justification, preferably referencing the BG section where there's justification.

We now have Major Effort code; +help +me for details, though in brief you submit a Major Effort by typing +me Title=Description. Please include the two traits you are advancing in your description.

For instance, you might submit +me Romancing the Stone=I have found this stone, and I intend to make it mine. (Charm, Sculpture)

I am not sure when IC Period 1 will be ending. We will announce that within a day or two, but start submitting your +mes now.
