The great news of the Curia Custodes was that Master Theo, long the Constable of the Holy City, is resigning - forced to do so by the Patriarch, who has sent a senior Sword of Lextius, Sir William Gaheris, as his candidate to be Constable. Over the strenuous objections of Countess Amber, Sir William was appointed, though not before Count Walker attempted to have his cousin Count Galen made a sort of 'deputy Constable' as a check against Sir William's power. Count Antonio opposed the motion, however, and collectively the Count of the Vines' nomination was sunk.
Sir William's first act as Constable was to declare his intervention in a Leon village named Issen, supposedly the scene of some dark sorcery. He announced that he would be appropriating it for the Church in order to cleanse the taint upon the land, and Count Renaud nearly struck him over it. Eventually, there was an agreement that the Church would investigate and then a decision would be made, but from all accounts it sounds like Sir William intends on arriving in Issen with force - and likely that means that if Leon does not stop him he will have de facto control.
Finally, Countess Amber proposed that the vacant office of Chancellor be filled, and Count Renaud proposed her name. Likely, this was a move to try to balance the unrestrained power of Sir William, and indeed Lord Geoffrey seemed to support the naming of a new chancellor. Count Walker, however, then proposed Vice-Count Lyov and then Count Antonio proposed the matter be deferred, with matters finally settling out so that no Chancellor was named to balance Sir William's power.
All in all, the courtiers are concerned: it feels as if the Church is making an assault on Lord Geoffrey and the Guardianship, and that Sir William's arrival is perhaps part of an effort to see the De Moley star fall and Yathrib be brought directly under Patriarchal control.

Feast For Crows Mar 29 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crow's Landing, a Johburg vassal just north of the starport badlands of Pilgrim's Landing, remained in the hands of a Kurgan taifa lord after the Betrayal: Sheikh Ghamzi al-Gesar had occupied the barony, and when the Kurgans were beaten back he holed himself up and sued for peace. For three years, he has been a sore presence in the heart of Cote-Leon, paying his taxes to Johburg and providing soldiers when required but reminding everyone of the Kurgan advances during the Betrayal.
Now, however, he is dead. Lusara Decados - a young Decados knight who had come in Flavius' Crusade - had caused a small stir some months ago when Sheikh Ghamzi took her as his third wife, but now she has shown her true potential. According to the news flying along the Pilgrim Road, she killed the Sheikh in bed while a cadre of loyal guards secured the manor house, and now she has proclaimed herself Baroness of Crow's Landing; in the very hour of the Sheikh's death, a Reeve in Decados employ presented himself to the Chancery with a paper claim to the barony, one of the fief grants from 4063. Before she even finished consolidating her power in Crow's Landing, she was already celebrated a sort of hero among the crusaders for killing an infidel tick sucking so close to the heart of the Crusader State, and now rumors say she has finished cementing her coup and is headed to Akko to take her place among the peerage of the State. What the Countess of Johburg will have to say about all of this, of course, is yet unknown.

War News Apr 29 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There has been a great Kurgan push in St. Lextius' Ward recently - streams of bloody soldiers coming back across the Shining Gulf from the Holy City. Marshal Cassius rallied a counter-attack, however, and is said to have led the van himself. The most recent reports are saying that the Known Worlders gained three whole blocks of the city in the exchange, which lasted the better part of the last month, which is the largest single gain in a month since the bulk of the Flavian Crusade faded about a year ago.
Still, the returning soldiers are saying that the Kurgans appear to be getting reinforcements, with more, fresh soldiers arriving along the monorail from Iskandretta. Some of the crusaders fighting there have seen Mortimer and Gesar heraldry on enemy patrols, suggesting that some of these reinforcements are from as far away as the Pearl Cities.

Custodial Court May 04 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Curia Custodes demonstrated, overall, that the Guardian's hold on the planet in his struggle with Sir William is tenuous but holding on. First, Captain Edward Graves bore a message from the Holy City, saying that Marshal Cassius needs three thousand more men at least if he is to hold what he has. Lord Hugh Justinian was nominated as Captain-General to oversee the contingent, and as debate began Count Walker Justinian was overcome by what can only be described as a vision from the Pancreator. He fell to his knees, begged forgiveness, and this was taken by the court as a general sign that the time is nigh to take the Holy City.
That brief unity did not last. Sir William proposed that the Curia abandon the Craglands, and suggested Earl Caelwyn Li-Halan to be captain-general of that effort. The Curia was nearly deadlocked, with Leon, the Bees, Olivet and most of the Crusaders in support of that proposal while Johburg, Oultrejoyeaux, Auberry and the Vines were opposed. It only barely failed after first Geoffrey de Moley and then a Li Halan, the Baroness of Jopha, crossed the Constable and House Li Halan. The ramifications of those lines will shake out in the coming weeks.
Geoffrey then proposed Amber for Chancellor, which provoked another heated fight, with Leon, the Bees, and of course Johburg itself lining up behind her while the Crusaders, the Vines, and Olivet opposed her. While Don Antonio and Vice-Count Lyov opposed the nomination, many of their vassals broke ranks, leading to a deadlock broken finally by the vote of Sir Edward Graves, the Imperial captain, who had up until then abstained. She was made Chancellor by the narrowest of margins, a single vote.
In total, the Guardian faction was able to hold the line, barely, against the Justinians and the Crusaders, but the enormous battles in view over every issue laid bare how delicate the political situation is. Any change could result in the Curia becoming irrelevant in the face of the crusader faction or in the Justinians finally rising again to ascendance.

Holy Blood May 14 5001 Lextius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The city teems with violent and unchecked zeal. Seven merchants from Oultrejoyeaux were pulled from their carts by a crowd chanting "To Kill a Heathen is the Pancreator's Will"- Their crime was suspected trading with heathen merchants from Malaga. The violence is not limited to the peasant class either, for a diplomat of Farouk on his way to visit the Count Juan Antonio de Justus was beset upon by a crowd of recently arrived Crusaders. Goaded by priests, the Crusaders dragged the diplomat and his guard from their horses and beat them to death with cudgels. Amidst all of mayhem that spontaneously erupts in the streets the constant cry of "The Pancreator wills it!" rises, for surely it is time for the righteous to slaughter the unfaithful and reclaim the holy city? Revelation awaits the pious!

The Universal Flame burns not only heathens but the sinful as well, and Crusaders have taken to acting as ecclesiastic police, punishing such moral crimes as usury, public lewdness, and in increasing amounts the broadly interpreted crime of heresy. Two members of the Illuminated Order of Jewelcrafters were hanged by the Order of the Virtuous Star, a long standing Crusading company that has seen considerable combat in Revelation, for the supposed crime of 'spreading vicious and blasphemous lies' regarding the odds of success in Revelation. Three prostitutes were branded and beaten by soldiers bearing heraldry of House Li Halan, having peddled their 'wares' too close to finer areas of West Goat Road. Father Giordanus and several other Orthodox deacons were heard calling for the 'purging the city of the ungodly', suggesting that a larger and more organized action against the infidel and the sinner lays on the horizon.

These, however, are a mere sampling of the violence and agitation that has seized the city and hundreds of assaults and brawls are now breaking out daily. Sanctuary Aeon has done its best to give some succor to those with stab wounds or broken limbs from the fighting, though the number of injured and the desire to keep infection from spreading has forced the Brothers and Sisters to set up makeshift tents outside of the Mission.

With so many crimes committed in the name of the Celestial Sun and the Prophet it would be easy to forget the villainy that has no immediate explanation. Several children have gone missing in the Drag and though this has been occurring for some time it appears that only now people are taking notice of some kind of pattern. Two Watch-Wardens ranging not far off the main Pilgrim's road report coming across the gnawed bones of a dozen corpses all piled together in a pit. An unidentified man was hanged from a footbridge in a cross-street in the Copper District, an upside down cross painted in purple on his chest and a handful of flowers tied to his hand. A body washed up onshore just north of Akko dressed in the livery of the Count of Leon- the man's body and face were mutilated beyond recognition.

Saint Jackson Divided Jun 08 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The southern army has advanced as far as Saint Jackson, the last Known Worlder-held village before Zatan - and there it has stopped, bogged down by an internal crisis following a fight in the streets between crusaders and the Brother Battle. Inside the town are the Brother Battle, their armsmen, and some of the troops from Akko. Outside the town are several hundred crusaders, the crusaders with Lord Caelwyn, and some of the other troops from Akko. There has been no violence since yesterday, and the Amaltheans in the town have at least taken away the bodies and treated the wounded; the butcher's bill was 27 casualties among Lord Belliwood's company, with 13 dead outright and another 14 in various states of wounds. They are under guard by the Brother Battle, of whom one was wounded with a bruise to his shoulder.
There is a general agreement upon the facts of the dispute: Lord Belliwood went inside the Church of Saint Jackson to pray and found the shrine inside to Jackson de Moley, who was venerated as a saint here on Yathrib but rejected firmly as a saint in the wider Known Worlds. An order was given upon reunification that his shrines be removed - indeed, the cathedral in Akko, formerly dedicted to him, had to be renamed - but that order was never followed here, in a town named after him and in a church where he is supposed to have interceded and worked miracles. Lord Belliwood demanded that the shrine be destroyed, and started towards it; Sister Therese, the Brother Battle caretaker of the shrine, bodily ejected him from the church. Words were exchanged between Belliwood and Prior Zebediah, upon which Zebediah drew his pistol and shot Lord Belliwood in the head; Belliwood was saved by his energy shield, at which point battle was joined, with the Brother Battle driving Lord Belliwood's men out of the village square.

The Mount of Apples Jun 15 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the days since Sir William issued his War Chancery declaration, Akko has been quiet - enforcedly so. A regiment of Church soldiers has taken up residence on the Mount itself, and many Swords of Lextius have been manning the walls and walking the halls of the Keep. No one has been prevented from coming or going, and the Guardian has a strong guard of Brother Battle around him who appear to have been staring down the Swords of Lextius who make a sort of second ring protecting him - though they look inward as much as out. In general, the attitude has been tense waiting, though business has been officially proceeding as normal, with several Swords of Lextius given sinecure positions and the Chancery continuing to pay people's salaries, monitor magistrates and the like.

Murder of Crows Jul 03 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It started, perhaps, when a company of Kossacks took up residence inside the manor at Crow's Landing -- not a strange thing, truly, since the barony is half-Decados held, half-Kurgan, and it is often a stopover for Decados soldiers moving between Akko and points north. The strangeness happened at midnight - there was a great clock in the hall, Ghamzi al-Gesar's pride, and when it struck twelve the murdering began. Kossacks moved from room to room, chainsabers making a terrible racket as they killed everyone they came across. A few claimed the House of the Mantis as their defense - and some, but not all, of those were spared. Ghamzi's men had no respite, however, nor his children, nor his wives, still kept in their harem after one of their own had become baroness.
Out in the countryside, others moved: crusaders, blessed by Sir William and led by Sir Julien Hawkwood, struck at the homes of taifa sheikhs and sayyids, at the farmsteads of janissaries and armsmen, murdering those they found in bed and cutting down the few that could reach for arms. By morning it was over; the white jumpgate cross banner the lead company of crusaders had carried was red with blood, and it flapped fitfully in the breeze as the Kossacks who held the citadel welcomed Sir Julien into its blood-drenched precincts. Sir William, reportedly, was one of the first to congratulate now-Lord Julien on his conquest, though perhaps more telling was the silent approval one hundred faceless terrors standing around the manor conveyed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Predictably, the Baroness of Haqq's very strange pronouncement has placed her immediately on the tips of tongues at court. Many jokes are being told about one person or another being 'smothered' if they don't do what they're told, and several lengthy and rather ribald stories are being told about stamina -- though in truth, for many nobles the reaction to her broadcast has been stunned silence and a refusal to comment on such a scandalous affair in public.
More interesting, however, is the chilling effect her broadcast has had on some of the more reasoned heads who were leaning towards public opposition of Sir William. While many of the young firebrands are still at it, Baroness Momoko is the highest-ranking peer to publicly speak out against the Lord Constable. Now, those who might make declarations against him - even private declarations - appear to be shrinking back, afraid of being painted with the same brush as the lady of Haqq.

Death, Chaos, and Rebirth Aug 07 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is the habit of Sir William to pray, and pray often; he closets himself with his confessor each morning before breakfast and then again just before Vespers, though he usually celebrates that office in public. Today -- Friday, August 7 -- he and Father Samson did not appear.
As the wait lengthened, there was uneasy stirring in the chapel; Sir Jonas Welk, one of William's lieutenants, set off to look for him, and that's when all hell broke loose. Reportedly, Sir Jonas found Sir William dead, stabbed with a liturgical knife, and Father Samson missing. Hue and cry immediately went up, and soldiers began to tear apart the Mount of Apples, ultimately finding Father Samson trying to walk out the front gate.
Meanwhile, Sir Vasiliy of the Questing Knights raised a mob to charge the Mount, only to have Church troops meet them on the Esplanade and open fire. The Knights of the Pious Lion - Count Renaud's picked company - broke up the riot, reluctantly joining forces with the Church troops, who began to respond to orders from Abbot Agravain.
Now, in the aftermath of Sir William's murder, Leon troops as well as Church forces occupy the Mount of Apples, with order being maintained more or less by the Brother Battle and Abbot Agravain, who has emerged as a sort of neutral party in the chaos. Father Samson, Sir William's killer, is in Agravain's custody, and Count Renaud is respecting his authority at least so far.
The Guardian is finally back out of Church hands, however -- Lord Geoffrey, protected by all the Brother Battle, has been seen meeting with both Count Renaud and Abbot Agravain. His first act was a public prayer at the Cathedral of the Warrior Saints, and now he is calling for peace and calm in a city still bitterly divided between crusaders and land-holding lords.

The Traitors' Banquet Aug 19 5001 Lextius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sidon Keep, the bulwark of the North, has fallen. An hour after Vespers today Kurgan dropships launched from the Casbah descended through the evening sky and landed in the protected courtyard of the keep, disgorging ceramsteel-clad soldiers. They found no resistance and within minutes the flags that marked the personal heraldry of Marquis Karl Justinian were pulled down and three new banners raised high to flutter in the winds rising off of the crags- that of the Kurgan Caliphate, that of Rutger Mortimer, and a third flag that has left many stunned at its implication.

Where were the men of faith and righteousness that had so long held the walls of Sidon against the Kurgan invasion? Why were the cannons and turrets that bristle from the Castle like spears thrust skyward all silent as the Kurgans arrived? These questions have an answer, and that answer is a dagger in the back of the Crusader State.

An hour before the Kurgans arrived the soldiers of Newbridge and Sidon feasted together following evening prayers. Had the men of Sidon an idea of what was to come they might have taken notice that their guests were not drinking as heavily or swearing as heartily. Had they reason to ask they might have inquired why so many of their allies had not bothered to strip of their field gear. But they had no suspicion of what was to come.

The room was in high spirits as the clock in the banquet hall was just ringing out its eighth chime. A toast was called by Sir Guillaume De Moley. He called for 'all of the false lords and petty pretenders' to be driven from Yathrib. A few eyebrows raised in surprise at the odd phrasing. When the toast concluded Guillame raised his glass in honor of the 'true Lord of Auberry'. There was only a moment for those with their wits still about them to realize Guillame's meaning before the men of Newbridge, the Baron Martin's trusted company, set upon them with swords and knives. Lord Martin himself drew his blade to duel Sir Randall Justinian, the Marquis' trusted lieutenant and Captain of the Gate, and their fight raged until Sir Randall fell, pierced by a dozen swords after he cut Lord Martin's face.

Positioned around the Castle the story was repeated over and over as ally turned into black-hearted betrayer. The men of Sidon watching scanners pointed skywards saw only a glint of steel reflecting in their screens before the blades of traitors plunged into their backs, and high up among the Pom-Pom lasers crews were set upon and thrown from the parapets by the men of Newbridge. Within minutes the defenses of the castle were deactivated and the gates to the town below sealed.

The Sails of Tyche Aug 20 5001 Lextius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A vast fleet of ships was seen passing Akko. Fishermen returning with their catch claim nearly fifteen squadrons of ships- some huge frigates and dozens of barques and smaller vessels. All were sailing low in the water with soldiers at the gun-whales. Where the Caid of Tyche is sailing is unknown- North, into the waters of Abay, Joyeaux, and Leon. Conventional wisdom suggests that the rich and unspoiled coasts of the County of Leon are about to endure the piracy for which the Caid is so famous.

Ghilat's Relief Aug 21 5001 Lextius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The relief force headed toward Ghilat, comprised of armsmen called up early for their duty from Joyeaux and soldiers from Jopha, made contact with scouts and riders from the Kurgan forces sacking Ghilat early this morning. After a few skirmishes at long range the Kurgans began a retreat, melting like snow in spring before the forces of Oultrejoyeaux.
Don Sans' return to the fields of Ghilat saw him once again commanding a smaller force than his Kurgan opponents but this time the Barbarian offered no fight. Fires were set in Ghilat and as the town burned the Kurgan invaders, their vicious work done, marched back out the way they arrived leaving desolation and ruin in their wake.
The relief army marched through streets littered with corpses, some cut down while running and others executed in a variety of creative and cruel ways. As the forces of Jopha and Joyeaux arrived at the castle gates the great steel portcullis opened and out stepped haggard, sunken-faced peasants: some men and women but mostly children. The Lady of Ghilat had, in her last few minutes before the Kurgan invaded, saved hundreds of her people by drawing them into protective walls of the castle.
Supplies were handed over to the weak and infirm and the wounded and sick were tended to in field tents as the fires were either put out or at the very least contained. The Siege of Ghilat has ended, but at a terrible cost in humanity.

Newbridge's Fate Aug 27 5001 Lextius
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the days following the Traitors' Banquet Newbridge, the seat of the duplicitous Baron Martin De Moley, has been in a state of panicked lock-down. Baronets and knights, along with the men at arms, have bunkered up in the town and manor house and have been engaging in impassioned discussions. The concern of the nobility, who all claim ignorance of their previous liege's intentions, is that they are to be viewed as conspirators and traitors as well.
When the forces of the Lady Katerine De Moley, Baroness of Josselin, arrived there was a sense of trepidation among the people of Newbridge. After a tense exchange at the gates, however, the Lady and her men were received into the town and have since been in discussions with the remaining vassals of Newbridge in the great hall. No one knows what they are discussing or what Lady Katerine has in store for the vassals and people of her traitor cousin.

War Drums in the Badlands Sep 01 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the last several weeks, the bandits and badlanders have been more active -- and now the watch-wardens believe they know why. A chieftain has begun to unite various competing bands of brigands, calling himself the Lander King, and apparently he has been moving warriors south towards Pilgrim's Landing. Now, the wardens believe that a full-scale attack on High Road and Low Road will come within the week, and that the Lander King's goal is to break open the refugee camps. When those hundred thousand desperate souls spill into Akko, the ensuing chaos will give the badlanders the opportunity to loot the whole city.
Naturally, the Lander King must be stopped. The Brother Battle have ordered that soldiers move to High Road from the Mount of Apples, and the armsmen called up over the threat of civil war are going there as well. With the Castellan of the North at Zatan, there are few soldiers from the Northern Quarter available, but Master Theo believes that the Brother Battle and the Armsmen will be enough, if the hearts of their leaders stand firm.

OOC: On Saturday, April 13, we're going to be running a series of 'Bandit Invasion' scenes - 3-4, probably - in a sort of narrative battle as the Lander King and his hordes try to get to the refugee camps. This will be a big, MUSH-wide event, so everyone feel free to be here -- we'll have scenes for war leaders, non-combatants, personal fighters, and everyone else under the sun.

Earthquake And Other Tremors Sep 07 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An earthquake struck the Mount of Apples -- indeed, all of Akko -- just after the opening of the Custodial Court. Many were buried, including all of the Seven Seigneurs save Lady Olivia and Count Walker. Even the Guardian himself was trapped, as well as leading peers like the Baroness of the Tomb, the Baroness of Avenal, the Baron of Margat and the commander of Prior's Ford. Lady Lysandra, it is said, was not breathing when she was pulled from the rubble, while Lord Arkady's legs were mangled, and the Guardian was pale and unsteady, helped by the two Childeric counts in rare cooperation. Counts Renaud and Antonio are said to have been trapped together in the tunnels; when they emerged, they were no more friends than before, though they were at least alive.
The Great Hall is in shambles, and while the towers of the Keep are in better state they are in disarray, with toppled furniture everywhere. The same is true for the Cathedral and the Monastery, along with many of the buildings in the Old City. The Foregate has had things worse -- fires have broken out in places and the city still works to fight them, while smoke rises from many places in the badlands. The question on everyone's tongue after they begin to pick up the pieces is: how? why? Akko has never seen an earthquake, and some say the Pancreator's hand is behind this tragedy -- none more than the Crusader Fadila, who people say tried to break open the camps with her army, seeing the quake as a sign. She was barely restrained from doing so, but with widespread collapses in the camps and hundreds dead they are now on a tight lockdown with rising fears of rebellion there.

Custodial Court Sep 21 5001 Paulus
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Custodial Court met again, this time outside because of the damage to the Great Hall, and Lord Geoffrey announced a Long Curia -- the court would meet and then never cease meeting, officially, with new matters to now be decided by a rolling vote kept by the Chancery. Its sessions would instead be gathering to debate the issues of the day rather than formal votes they have been before.

Once that matter was approved, affairs turned to the vacant Constabulary. Lysandra Justinian was nominated and approved without dissent, though the Oultrejoyeaux faction's absence was noted. Agravain van Gelder was next proposed for Chancellor, but this vote went less well -- Fiamma Decados proposed that Samina al-Malik might be a better candidate, and though the Hydessan lady was not officially nominated the vote for Chancellor was derailed. Instead, the matter was tabled for the Long Curia to take up.
