Clarifying Notes

How Companies Are Calculated

Fiefs receive a company of armsmen for roughly every one hundred armsmen their tenants provide, plus companies raised by chartered towns as appropriate. They then receive - depending on the size of their fief - some general purse-paid vehicles, flitters, special forces and artillery. The soldiers of a fief all have a special quality (like ‘mobile legions’ or ‘warrior culture’) that reflects their particular heritage, and then out of the lord’s privy purse a fief has between one and six other ‘signature’ companies. Baronies usually have 1-2 signature units; large baronies and marches have 3-4, while counties have 5-6. Fiefs with high urban populations or a great deal of support from Akko tend to have more ‘signature’ units, which represent cash expenditures rather than traditional arrangements.

How Troops Are Paid

Each unit notes how it is supported.

  • Tenants -- These soldiers are military tenants who serve in their lords in exchange for land.
  • Raised from town -- These soldiers are volunteers raised by a chartered town or district as part of their charter.
  • Paid by town -- These soldiers are also from a chartered town or district, but are mercenaries paid by the town to meet their obligations.
  • Paid by ship-soke -- These naval forces are paid by military tenants in lieu of doing service.
  • Paid by general purse -- These forces are paid out of the fief’s budget as part of non-discretionary, traditional spending. Their maintenance costs will not appear on economy sheets.
  • Paid by privy purse -- These forces are paid out of the fief’s budget as part of discretionary spending. Their maintenance costs will appear on economy sheets.
