Rite of Saint Amalthea the Healer

Calming

Ritual: Prayer
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: The Scene
Range: Sensory

The Calming rite disperses the emotions of rage, hate, fear, and even excitement. This rite has prevented many confrontations from escalating to violence, which accounts for the Amaltheans' reputation as diplomats. In addition, Calming may be effective for targets that are psychically manipulated or possessed by demons. The target receives a +4 goal roll to any use of the Discipline skill and will find their mood soothed, unable to experience strong emotions (either positive or negative), promoting clarify of thoughts.

Cleansing

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

Cleansing is similar to the rites of Sanctification but is used to target a living person rather than inanimate objects or places. The ritual removes the evil taints left on a person such as a curse or other malicious occult effect. Note that this rite cannot be used to cast out a possessing entity, although it can be used to momentarily halt effects caused to the victim of possession. True exorcism is an arduous and lengthy process (see below).

Healing Hand of Saint Amalthea

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

The theurgist places his hands on a wounded individual and recites a healing prayer. Amaltheans often also ritually wash the wound with fresh water. Every VP on this roll heals 1 serious wound or 3 flesh wounds.

Mend the Broken Mind

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Intuition + Theurgy
Duration Permanent
Range: Touch

Psychological trauma is quite common in the dark and troubling times of the fifty-first century. Wars, oppression, and crippling poverty compete for attention with barbarian and alien threats, occult forces, and demons lurking in the darkness. When attempting to use this rite the storyteller will set a threshold for the mental disorder to be cured, ranging from 1 VP (representing a minor quirk or idiosyncrasy) to 6 VPs (representing an individual completely in the throes of madness). If the theurgist succeeds in his roll the mental illness will recede in severity by 1 VP. The process of returning a mind to sanity is a slow one.

Oath to Saint Amalthea

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledged to one another at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task and it lasts as long the group is actively engaged in pursuing that task. Every member of the group that participates in the ritual receives a +2 bonus to any goal number when easing pain and aiding those in need. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when using rites of Saint Amalthea. Oathbreaking is a mortal sin and to break the Oath of Saint Amalthea comes at a terrible price. Any member of the group who betrays the oath receives a -1 to ALL goals until cleansed by holy trial or other similar act of penance. If a theurgist breaks the Oath of Saint Amalthea then he may no longer use any rites of Saint Amalthea until such time as he undergoes an act of penance.

Restoration

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

By invoking the compassion of Saint Amalthea, a theurgist can restore a body's spiritual humors to their proper balance: curing diseases and neutralizing poisons. Damage already suffered from such ills is not healed but the causes are removed, allowing patients to recover normally. Viruses and bacterial infections are defeated by the patient's own immune system and toxins are broken down and excreted from the body.

Rites of Saint Hombor

Blessing the Water

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

Centuries of war and industrial pollution has left more than a few wells poisoned and toxic. The urban poor likewise rarely have access to clean and drinkable water. With a simple prayer and blessing over water the theurgist cleans it of toxins, bacteria, and other harmful impurities. The theurgist may cleanse an amount of water in gallons equal to the VPs on the activation roll.

Humility's Obscurity

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

Too often the poor and outcast of society languish alongside the wealthy and powerful while being purposefully ignored. This rite grants the the theurgist the same shroud of social invisibility that surrounds beggars. Humility's Obscurity allows the theurgist to blend into a crowd, to fade into the background, or simply be overlooked by someone searching an area. For the remainder of the scene the Theurgist receives a +2 goal to any attempt to not be noticed, or a +4 goal if he is attempting to hide in a large (25 or more) crowd of commoners.

Insanity's Insight

Ritual: Blessing
Roll: Wits+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

The touch of divine revelation can drive a person mad and it is said that Hombor had a touch of that madness in him. This rite calls upon the madness of Hombor for a moment's worth of insight into a situation, person, or event. This rite is as unpredictable as the Saint it calls upon for wisdom and as such the revelation is often a simple word, image, or emotion that is likely to guide the theurgist to the answer they seek (or the answer they are meant to find). The number of VPs rolled should act as a guide for the storyteller, with 1 VP giving a vague clue and 6 VPs giving a vague clue that strongly indicates a specific answer or direction.

Oath to Saint Hombor

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledge to one another at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the sacrement of the Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task and it lasts as long the group is actively engaged in pursuing that task. Every member of the group that participates in the ritual receives a +2 bonus to any goal number when befriending others or performing selfless acts. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when using rites of Saint Hombor. Oathbreaking is a mortal sin and to break the Oath of Saint Hombor comes at a terrible price. Any member of the group who betrays the oath receives a -1 to ALL goals until cleansed by holy trial or other similar act of penance. If a theurgist breaks the Oath of Saint Hombor then he may no longer use any rites of Saint Hombor until such time as he undergoes an act of penance.

Patron of Beasts

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

Hombor, poor in the fortunes of mankind, was rich with animal friends. Stories tell of him sharing his scraps of food with hungry birds; of a Grackle Fox letting him join her cubs in suckling herl of a Naked Snake helping him to shelter from the blistering desert sun; and of how Hombor loved each and every one of his fleas, having named several of them! This rite allows the theurgist to call to him a number of nearby animals equal to his Faith. The theurgist may specificy broadly what kind of animals he is calling (“snakes”, “large mammals”, “beasts of burden”, etc) or may simply call whichever animals are close by. The beasts will stick close to the theurgist for the duration of the scene or for as long as the theurgist wishes, though they will not starve or abandon their young. Additionally, the animals may linger longer if well treated or they have no place to return to. Should a theurgist mistreat an animal summoned in this fashion, either by his own action or through inaction, he will immediately gain a point of hubris.

Pulpit's Gift

Ritual: Prayer
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

This rite is usually performed in preparation for holding a sermon or preaching and it fills the Theurgist with the glory of the Holy Flame of the Pancreator. For the remainder of the scene the Theurgist's words are filled with a power that resonates in the heart's of his flock. The Theurgist receives a +3 goal on any roll to influence a crowd with the words of the Pancreator and the Prophet. Preachers who use this power for self-serving or destructive purposes run the risk of gaining a point of hubris.

Rites of Saint Horace

Blessing the Crops

Modes: Sermon Roll: Presence+Theurgy Duration: Season Range: Special

Growing from the traditional role of the priesthood in agrarian cultures, this rite enables a theurgist to purify or enrich an amount of food equal to his Faith × 10 in pounds. Crop Blessing will neutralize impurities and organic poisons, restore perishable foods within two days of their having spoiled, and, in the case of untainted foodstuffs, make them more nutritious and fulfilling by 50% (for example, a ten day supply of rations can be stretched out to fifteen days). This rite is very valuable on many worlds, where the fading suns fail to properly nourish crops.

Dissolve and Combine

Ritual: Prayer Roll: Wits+Theurgy Duration: Instant Range: Touch

Horace was a man of learning before he became a champion of Zebulon’s teachings, and he brought to his work with theurgy the methods and processes of science. The Dissolve and Combine rite, sometimes called by its ancient name Solve et Coagula, is the basic process of all alchemical work. It entails separating the components of the material worked with, reducing them to their basic essences, and requires the use of a workshop or laboratory and an oven. Once dissolved, the alchemist may then combine the essential components back into a new material. (Note that the Dissolve and the Combine stages require separate castings of this rite).

The real use of this rite lies in choosing which essential components to put back in the combining phase. The alchemist can choose to leave out impure elements, and even add dissolved essential components from another material to make the end result uncorrupted and perfect. This will let her purify food or water similar to the Blessing the Crops/Water rite, but through a much more complex process. It also allows her to remove impurities from minerals, and distill useful properties from herbs and medicinal plants. Although a dissolved material can be combined back together, such material will seldom have the same structure as it used to, especially when dealing with organic materials. A steak dissolved to remove harmful fat forinstance, will not combine back into a proper steak, but rather a mushy meat-protein stew.

This rite is of limited use to living beings as the procedures of dissolving by cooking and grinding, etc., will kill any living creature. It would, however, be possible fo the alchemist to perform some forensic investigation work, such as separating the traces of poison in a murder victim’s hair and so on. The amount of material the alchemist can work with is restricted by the practical realities of her workspace, instruments and oven—most commonly, about 1 to 2 kg is the limit.

Divine Revelation

Ritual: Prayer Roll: Intuition+Theurgy Range: Self Duration: Special

Developed from the common prayer for guidance, this rite guarantees the theurgist some kind of insight into whatever problem is vexing her. The theurgist receives a +4 goal number to all Lore tests.

Oath to Saint Horace

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledged to one another at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task (lasting one drama), such as a journey or mission. Every member of the pledge receives a +2 bonus to any goal number when performing research or preserving lore. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when casting further rites of Saint Horace.

Betraying the pledge comes at a terrible price, as Oathbreaking is a Mortal Sin tarnishing one’s soul mirror. The +2 bonus is turned into a ‑1 penalty to all goal numbers, lasting till the offender is redeemed by undertaking a pilgrimage or some other holy trial. In addition, Oathbreaking theurgist members of the pledge can no longer call upon rites of Saint Horace.

Silencing the Maddened Wilderness

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Scene Range: Sensory

The theurgist sings hymns to the Pancreator’s honor, causing all Symbiots in range to lose their connection to the Lifeweb— the mystical rampant life force that seems to be the source to their powers. Symbiot powers stop working and shapeshifters can no longer change form. Seeds and other forms of Symbiot conversion and infection become dormant, and those already infected (but not yet turned) will recover. And, perhaps most important of all, Symbiot masters lose all ability to communicate with and control their drones. Symbiot Tech will still work though, weapons will fire and vehicles operate, but sub-systems (remote telepathic control, infection bombs, life sensors, etc.) might not.

Tongues of Babel

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Wits+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

Common among missionaries, the Tongues of Babel enables a theurgist to understand and speak almost any language with which he is not already familiar. For some time before the rite, he must hear the language spoken frequently by natives or other fluent speakers, getting used to the sounds and rhythms. During the next scene the missionary gains the advantage of having the appropriate Culture skill at rank 5. This rite does not confer the ability to read the language.

Rites of Saint Lextius

Devotional Liturgy

Ritual: Sermon
Goal: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

Recitation of this passage from the Omega Gospels is the traditional way of boosting morale, usually before battle. A liturgy must be read aloud, and all true believers within earshot add a +2 bonus to all goal numbers involving Discipline or on any rolls testing morale for the duration of the scene. The range of this rite cannot benefit from PA systems or other forms of long-distance communications.

Dispersal of Darkness

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Scene Range: Self

The theurgist may use his faith to hold back the minions of evil. Husks, demons, doppelgangers and other manifestations of the dark cannot approach the theurgist any closer than his Faith in meters. The Manifest Light are believed to use a variation of this rite against Symbiots on Stigmata, although this version repels only unnatural evils.

Fearsome Majesty

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: 1 turn
Range: Sensory

This rite causes fear of the Pancreator to clutch the heart of heretics and unbelievers. The target suffers a ‑3 penalty to all combat actions for 1 turn, the theurgist may expend 1 point of Wyrd as a free action to extend the duration for another turn. Anyone with a Faith attribute higher than 5 and who is also not an antinomist is immune to this rite. This rite is not cumulative with the Prophet’s Censure or Tortures of the Damned.

Give Sanctuary

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Permanent
Range: Touch

The theurgist provides Sanctuary for the persecuted within the confines of a site made holy through the Consecration sacrament. The latter, in itself, is enough to deter most people from chasing their target into the site, as doing so is considered an attack on the property and authority of the Church. This rite makes it exceptionally difficult for the individual given Sanctuary to be removed from the Church against his will. All rolls which aid the individual to avoid capture and removal gain a +3, whether that involves Sneak rolls to hide from pursuers, intimidation rolls to cow abductors, and even combat goals to resist capture. Note, however, that if the individual given Sanctuary initiates combat he loses these blessings.

Oath to Saint Lextius

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledged to one another at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task (lasting one drama), such as a journey or mission. Every member of the pledge receives a+2 bonus to any goal number when upholding a pledge, providing an example to others or defending the meek. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when casting further rites of Saint Lextius.

In addition, Oathbreaking theurgist members of the pledge can no longer call upon rites of Saint Lextius.

Righteous Fervor

Ritual: Prayer
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Self

Brothers Battle monks are renowned for their discipline and loyalty. The rite of Righteous Fervor intensifies their already legendary stoicism, allowing a Brother to resist all temptations, persuasions, fast talks, etc., that would sway him from his duty. During the rite, the Brother declares a vow, such as, “No harm shall come to the bishop under my watch,” “I shall bring the perpetrator to justice,” or “I shall safely deliver the writ to the Heirophant on Byzantium Secundus.” The Brother gains a +5 goal number to resist mental or social obstacles which would hinder his duty, such as the orders of the bishop to step down from his task, the knavery of the Decados marquis, the lamentation of a peasant to get her trapped brother from under the fallen ox-cart, etc. While the Brothers Battle dedication is to be admired, it should be noted that Fervored Brothers can become quite callous to pleas for help if they seem to hinder their duty. If they do refuse such pleas while Fervored, they must confess their guilt within a week after the rite’s effect has ended, or risk gaining Hubris.

Rites of Saint Mantius

Armor of Mantius

Ritual: Blessing
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

This theurgic armor protects the target by hardening her aura to resist physical intrusion, forming it to her body. The subject of this rite may add his Faith to his armor value.

Liturgy of the Wrathful Host

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

This passage from the Omega Gospels is read aloud prior to battle to fill the hearts of the faithful with the fire of their holy cause. The range of this rite cannot benefit from PA systems or other forms of long-distance communications. The liturgy grants a +2 goal number to all Focus tests. Those blessed under the Liturgy of the Wrathful Host ignore up to a -2 in penalties from Wounds or other injuries. Note that those wounded in this fashion still fall unconscious when their penalties equal their Resolve.

Martial Focus

Ritual: Prayer
Roll: Wits+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

By calling on the Pancreator to steady her hand when under fire, the theurgist gains a +2 goal bonus to her combat actions.

Oath to Saint Mantius

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledged to one another at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task (lasting one drama), such as a journey or mission. Every member of the pledge receives a +2 bonus to any goal number when seeking to overcome ones physical or mental limitations or defending the faithful. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when casting further rites of Saint Manitus.

Betraying the pledge comes with a terrible price, as Oathbreaking is a Mortal Sin, tarnishing one’s soul mirror. The +2 bonus is turned into a ‑1 penalty to all goal numbers, lasting till the offender is redeemed by undertaking a pilgrimage or some other holy trial. In addition, Oathbreaking theurgist members of the pledge can no longer call upon rites of Saint Mantius.

Oath of the Shieldmates

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Wits+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

This rite allows the theurgist to band his comrades into a coherent fighting unit. A telepathic bond of sorts is forged between the theurgist and his targets, allowing quick, accurate and effortless communication between him and them. This is not the same as telepathy: those bound together in this rite do not 'transmit' their thoughts to one another nor do they 'hear' the thoughts of their peers. Instead, those under the Oath of the Shieldmates share knowledge back and forth. If one member of the team knows the layout of a building then all know it; if one member of the team knows where guards are walking, all know it; and if one of the team members is hurt or needs help, all those linked together know roughly where their wounded friend is. It is thanks to this rite that Brother Battle hostage rescue teams are renowned for their clockwork precision.

Perfection of the Body

Ritual: Prayer
Roll: Strength+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

Saint Mantius exemplifies the physical protector of the spiritual. Through dedication and focus the followers of Mantius learn how to use their spiritual energy to enhance their physical feats. This rite aids the theurgist with a +3 goal number to all Athletics tests, as well as to Vigor for the purpose of lifting.

Smiting Hand

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Goal: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

The rite channels the power of the characters faith into his melee weapon adding a +2 to his weapon’s normal damage. The theurgist’s attacks can now also cause damage to ethereal and other insubstantial creatures.

Rites of Saint Maya

Fault of the Soulless

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Sensory

Developed soon after the Fall, this rite targets a high-tech item and causes it to malfunction. Normally used against personal technology (blasters, squawkers, think machines, golems of human size or smaller), the rite can be used to target larger machines, though the VPs required increases with size and complexity. As a guideline, simple personal technological items require 1 VP, more advanced TL 7-8 personal items require 2 VPs. Additionally, add +1 VP for standalone machines, +2 VPs for vehicles, and +3 VPs for small facilities or small spaceships.

Inquisitorial Commandment

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Special
Range: Sensory

Use of this rite is the theurgic version of a shot of truth serum; the target is compelled to answer one question addressed to her, and to do so truthfully. Questions must be answered fully, completely and honestly, without evasion or trickery. This does not in any way prevent the target from initiating violence upon the Theurgist.

Knowing the False Heart

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

Essential to the pursuit of justice, this rite allows the theurgist to act as a lie detector. Since this rite focuses only on intentional dishonesty and deliberate untruthfulness it is sometimes possible for the target to dissemble, hide or twist the truth. This rite affects only a single target who is typically unaware that the Theurgist is using this rite to scrutinize his statements.

Oath to Saint Maya

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship pledge by the saints to one another in the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the Sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of a specific task (lasting no more than one story), such as a journey or mission. Every member of the pledge receives a +2 goal bonus to actions that punish the guilty. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when casting further rites of Saint Maya.

Betraying the pledge comes at a terrible price, as oathbreaking is a mortal sin that tarnishes one’s soul mirror. The +2 goal bonus becomes a ‑2 goal penalty, which lasts until the offender is redeemed by undertaking a pilgrimage or some other holy trial. Oathbreaking theurgist members cannot call upon the rites of Saint Maya.

Stench of Evil

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

Casting Stench of Evil enables a theurgist to “sniff out” acts of Antinomy, the actions of a psychic’s Urge and the presence of demons or alien artifacts with an evil taint. This rite only indicates the presence of such evil (within smelling distance), but does not show the theurgist exactly what is going on, only that evil exists and that its influence is active within an area. “I detect the stink of brimstone in this house.”

Sting of Conscience

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Special
Range: Sensory

This rite is usually accompanied by a verbal harangue from the theurgist or an associate, the two combining to make the subject feel guilty about some past sin or misdeed. The target will feel compelled to confess and make up for the transgression, although not necessarily to the theurgist or associate. When this rite is cast without the verbal accusations to guide it, there is no telling exactly what its effect may be. A relatively guiltless person may begin to obsess on some minor bit of mischief from childhood, while a truly sinful person may be driven to wildly self-destructive acts that could endanger everyone around him.

Torch Bearing

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

With this rite the theurgist can create a flame without using any tool or technology. The fire will burn for the turn without need of fuel; beyond the initial turn the flame requires fuel to continue burning. The flame is real and may be used to ignite flammable objects or illuminate a small area about 5 meters radius.

Tortures of the Damned

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Sensory

This rite incapacitates the target with unimaginable pain and images of Gehennuagap (hell). These visions may take the form of Orthodox and Avestite description, burning hellfire or numbing cold seeming to last for an eternity, or they may take a more personal form, the reliving of a traumatic event or seeing one’s greatest fears come to pass, or some amalgamation of both. In either case, the target will be a pathetic, sobbing wreck for at least seven turns after the rite is discontinued. Due to the deep psychological nature of this experience, however, residual effects (such as a mental disorder) may last for long afterward.

Rites of Saint Palamedes

Consecration

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Special
Range: Touch

The theurgist consecrates an object, turning it into a vestment (see above). Vestments lose their sanctity over time, as well as if used for an inappropriate purpose (going against the will of the Pancreator or the Church, or acting egoistically, etc.), or if bartered for money or favor. As long as it is well cared for, the vestment continues to aid the theurgist in performing rites, until the duration of the right ends.

Consecration of Sacred Ground

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Special
Range: Sensory

This rite is a theurgic variant the Temple Consecration sacrament. It can only be performed on a site already consecrated through the sacrament, such as most churches, temples and shrines within the Known Worlds. This “upgrades” the holy site to also be a place of theurgic energies, but unlike ordinary consecrated places, the theurgic version has a limited duration. A theurgically consecrated sacred ground is impassable to creatures created or made manifest through occult means, such as husks, demons, specters, etc. In addition, occult powers performed within the sacred ground, or across the border between sacred and profane ground, suffer a ‑4 penalty. Powers already in action when the rite is cast, or that pass into such a sacred ground, will come to a halt prematurely.

Immortalize

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Permanent
Range: Touch

This rite is a theurgic version of the Cleansing of the Shell sacrament, and allows the theurgist to forever sever a dead person’s connection to his or her mortal shell. The target, who must be a deceased person for whom the Cleansing of the Shell sacrament has been previously performed, can henceforth never be affected by occult or diabolic powers or effects, and can never become a restless dead (i.e. a Husk, Specter or similar creature). A person already affected by such effects may be forever laid to rest by this rite, once he or she has been buried or cremated and had the Cleansing of the Shell sacrament performed on his or her behalf.

Investiture

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Special
Range: Touch

The Rite of Investiture is used to turn a suitable object into a Tabernacle. A Tabernacle created in this fashion adds a number of points equal to the VPs rolled to the bearer's Faith for the purposes of calculating the number of Theurgic rites the bearer is able to perform a day. A tabernacle, properly cared for and prayed over regularly remains potent indefinitely. If it is not cared for properly, however, the blessing will fade within a few weeks.

Oath to Saint Palamedes I

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledged to each other at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, in a theurgical version of the sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task (lasting one drama), such as a journey or mission. Every member of the pledge receives a +2 bonus to any goal number when enforcing Orthodox tenants. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when casting further rites of Saint Palamedes I.

Betraying the pledge comes at a terrible price, as Oathbreaking is a Mortal Sin tarnishing one’s soul mirror. The +2 bonus is turned into a ‑1 penalty to all goal numbers; lasting till undertaking a pilgrimage or some other holy trial redeems the offender. In addition, Oathbreaking theurgist members of the pledge can no longer call upon rites of Saint Palamedes I.

The Prophet’s Censure

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Sensory

The theurgist gives an enemy of the faith a taste of divine wrath, by reciting the first two lines of the Prophet’s Admonishment of the Unbelievers and making the sign of the barred jumpgate at the target. This is a reverse of the Holy Blessing, and penalizes the target in a particular task, causing him to suffer a ‑3 penalty to the goal number. The effect lasts until the target has made the roll for the particular task censured (including acombat action), or till the scene is over, whichever comes first.

The Prophet’s Holy Blessing

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Touch

The theurgist traces the jumpgate cross or presses a religious icon to his companion’s forehead, thereby bestowing a blessing upon the target. This grants a +3 goal number bonus on one specific roll about to be performed.

The Righteous Assignation of Penance

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: Permanent
Range: Touch

This rite is a theurgic version of the Penance sacrament. When someone needs absolution for sins bearing occult significance, such as Hubris, Urge, certain curses, diabolic taints etc., the Righteous Assignation of Penance may be required to deal with it. Note that the subject need not be personally responsible for the sin in question, especially when he or she has been the target of hostile occult forces or diabolic influence, as the Church doctrines teach that unholy taints can only be wrought onto those who are not free of sin. Therefore, it is possible to confess the sins that allow such influences to take hold of the target, and it is even possible to confess sins one is not aware of or remember having committed.

Sanctification

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Touch

Sanctification purifies an item of evil taint, removing any evil, psychic, theurgic or demonic trace present. The tainted object simply loses this effect and returns to normal. Once sanctified, the object can be further purified through Consecration. This is favored in the Church culture as an ultimate symbolic triumph over evil.

Rites of Saint Paulus

Celestial Alignment

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: 1 Turn
Range: Self

One of the earliest rites attributed to Saint Paulus, it was believed that his faith allowed him to navigate by the divine fire of the Pancreator, even under an alien sky. This rite allows the theurgist to pinpoint his exact location in space and time, relative to the closest stellar bodies or geographical features. When on a world the theurgist can learn exactly where he is in relation to places he is familiar with (such as a city he has visited or features of a map studied) as well as what time it is. When in space the theurgist may divine where he is (i.e. the ship he’s aboard), in relation to other stellar bodies, such as the distance to the system’s sun, the direction of the jumpgate, or his path in relation to a comet’s trajectory, etc. He needs to see only one familiar feature, such as the sun over a world, or a system’s gas giant planet, to realize the alignment of all other features and bodies of which he is aware. The theurgist may not, however, consider his location in relation to bodies and features he knows nothing about, and the rite will not bring him new discoveries, instead it simply organizes the spaces and places he is aware of, in relation to each other and himself.

Fruitful Multiplication

Ritual: Prayer, Sermon
Roll: Resolve+Theurgy
Duration: Instant
Range: Touch

This rite increases the amount of some good, most typically food or water.

Hearth

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Wits+Theurgy

When performed over a campsite or fire-pit this rite will allow the theurgist to easily strike a fire generating enough light to see in a 10 meter radius, and can be used to boil water and cook food. The fire created is supernatural however, and causes no accidental or surplus heat or damage (and can thus be safely used even indoors or aboard spacecraft). It will not set other materials, no matter how flammable, afire, and it cannot be used to smelt ore or bake pottery. No fuel is needed, and oxygen is not consumed, but a cleared space must be prepared for the rite. Individuals who camp around the fire will sleep peacefully and comfortably, regardless of the condition of the ground.

Lamp of the Traveler

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Wits+Theurgy
Duration: Scene
Range: Self

This rite creates a glowing insubstantial sphere in the theurgist’s palm capable of casting enough light to read by in a 3 meter radius. An alternate version of this rite creates a tight searchlight-type beam that extends from the theurgist’s palm, which can be used to search darkened rooms or dazzle enemies of the Faith. The range for this beam is 10 meters.

Oath to Saint Paulus

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Story
Range: Sensory

Inspired by the Oath of Fellowship that the saints pledged to one another at the time of their worst trial, this rite binds a group together in friendship and trust, and is a theurgical version of the sacrament of Holy Congress. The pledge must be made at the start of some specific task (lasting one drama), such as a journey or mission. Each member of the pledge receives a +2 bonus to any goal number when navigating, tracking, searching or investigating the unknown. Theurgist members receive the same bonus when casting further rites of Saint Paulus.

Betraying the pledge comes at a terrible price, as Oathbreaking is a Mortal Sin tarnishing one’s soul mirror. The +2 bonus is turned into a ‑1 penalty to all goal numbers, lasting until the offender is redeemed by undertaking a pilgrimage or some other holy trial. In addition, Oathbreaking theurgist members of the pledge can no longer call upon rites of Saint Paulus.

Safe Journey

Ritual: Sermon
Roll: Presence+Theurgy
Duration: Special (1 Journey)
Range: Touch

This rite protects a group of travelers and/or a mode of transportation for the duration of a specific journey (no longer than a few months). The travelers will be safe from accidents and side-effects of traveling. For example, they will not: be incidental targets of pirates or muggers, have their horse trip and fracture its leg, suffer a flat tire, be struck by lightning, etc. (ignore travel related Mishaps). They will also be safe from supernatural effects and threats, such as the Sathra effect going through a jumpgate (even if the Sathra dampers are disabled) and so on. The protection will not work if threats deliberately seek out the travelers, such as an enemy Baronet moving to arrest and plunder the cadre’s coach, nor will it protect from accidents suffered through reckless behavior or conduct going against common sense (pushing a horse to sprint over rocky ground at night, carrying a metal rod high during a thunderstorm, etc.). The Pancreator looks after his children, but he does not reward stupidity.

Rending the Veil of Unreason

Ritual: Blessing, Prayer
Roll: Intuition+Theurgy
Duration: 1 Scene
Range: Self

NOTE- This rite is still in the process of being revised.

This rite lets the theurgist perceive a person’s soul mirror reflection of the light of the Celestial Sun, thereby gaining insight into that person’s conviction and sins. The reflection takes the form of a miniature of the Holy Flame, burning in the heart region of the target’s aura. The size of the reflected Flame is determined by the target’s Faith rating, and it’s shining strength by the target’s temporary Faith rating. The Flame fills about 10% of the person’s torso area per Faith rating, and shines with approximately 10% of the strength of Urth’s Sol per temporary Faith Point. As the soul mirror is “tarnished” by sinful actions and intentions, the theurgist may discern the type and extent of the target’s sinful ways. Sin “Tarnish”

Pride Narrow vertical streaks
Greed Broad horizontal streaks
Lust Violet bubbles rising from the bottom
Envy Greenish streaks pointing inward from the outer edges
Sloth Thick bluish bubbles rolling down from the top
Wrath Reddish streaks radiating from center
Oathbreaking Cracks; one for each oath broken, with sizes depending on the oath importance
